Short Course in Competency Based Selection Interview

Course Description:

The competency-based interview is an integral part of the selection process. Through it, employers are able to ask questions that require candidates to demonstrate that they possess a particular skill or competency the organization is looking for. In addition, competency-based interviews may look into career motivation and commitment by highlighting queries that probe candidates’ knowledge of the organization they are applying to. The Competency-Based Selection Interviewing is designed to equip line managers and HR professionals on how to select candidates that are fit for the job and for the organization. This workshop will enhance the participants' competency-based interviewing skills.

Course Objectives:

As a result of the certificate course, the participants would be able to:

  1. Identify the importance of a carefully designed selection process.
  2. Enumerate the various selection processes and tools
  3. Explain the importance of competencies
  4. Formulate competency-based selection interview questions
  5. Demonstrate effective competency-based selection interviewing skills utilizing the STAR technique

Course Outline:

Introduction: The introduction provides an overview of how the company benefits from a well-planned recruitment and selection processes which require effective interviewing and selection skills. Emphasis is given on the use of competencies as a valuable tool in conducting interviews.

Module 1: The Selection Process

  • This module will explain the importance of the selection process, and how company branding and employee value proposition help in communicating the values and culture of the organization which then increase the interest of job seekers as well as the engagement of the current workforce.

Module 2: Interview as Part of the Assessment Process

  • This module will discuss how the interview is an integral part of the selection process, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of various types of interviews.

Module 3: Competencies

  • This module will explain what Competency-Based Approach means. Participants will be able to define what competencies are, identify the different types of competencies, and enumerate the advantages of anchoring the selection process on competencies. They will be given the opportunity to identify and assess competencies relative to the job/position.

Module 4: Competency-based Selection Interview

  • This module will discuss how one can make use of competency-based questions. Participants will craft competency-based questions based on the job descriptions, vision, mission, values, and goals of the organization. Further, they will demonstrate effective competency-based interviewing using the STAR technique. This section will also provide participants some guidelines on how to effectively evaluate applicants based on the competency-based interview questions.

Module 5: Interview Skills & Techniques

  • This section will provide participants with techniques on how to handle and conduct effective interviews. They will also learn how to avoid pitfalls during interview sessions.

Module 6: Demonstration of CBSI using the STAR Technique

  • Through simulation exercises, participants will have the opportunity to practice the use of CBSI. A feedback session is also aimed to provide constructive inputs on how they can further improve their skills as interviewers.

Synchronous Session Schedule:

  • Monday & Thursday: 1:30 PM - 5:00 PM (Online)
  • Thursday to Friday: 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM (Onsite)

  • HR practitioner & line managers

Participant Requirements:

  • Participants shall sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement and Data Privacy Form

Technical requirements:

  • Computer installed with Zoom
  • Stable internet connection for live or synchronous sessions
