Certificate Course in Facilitating Adult Learning

Course Description:

The Certificate Course in Facilitation of Adult Learning is a 45-hour course (combination of synchronous and asynchronous sessions) aimed at developing the competencies of HR professionals and managers as facilitators of learning and change grounded on adult learning theories, principles, methods, with emphasis on facilitation in the virtual space.

Course Objectives:

As a result of the certificate course, the participants would be able to:

  1. Describe the key principles and methods of adult learning and discuss their application in the current learning environment
  2. Identify different learning and facilitation styles and their implications to facilitating groups
  3. Describe and demonstrate effective virtual communication skills
  4. Observe and analyze processes in virtual group interactions
  5. Identify and use tools and technology to engage virtual audiences
  6. Discuss the value of Inclusion and apply tools in making facilitation more inclusive
  7. Design and facilitate various virtual group interactions

Course Outline:

Module 0: Introduction to the Course

  • Participants will be given the course overview and introduction. This also includes the tech dry run and checking of compatibility with platforms.

Module 1: Adult Learning Principles and Theories

  • This module will describe the key principles and methods of adult learning and discuss their application in the current learning environment.

Module 2: Learning Styles

  • Participants will identify different learning styles and their implications to facilitating groups.

Module 3: Facilitation Styles

  • Participants will identify different facilitation styles and their implications to facilitating groups.

Module 4: Foundation of Virtual Facilitation

  • This module will describe and demonstrate effective virtual communication skills through virtual meeting, to experience and discuss what does a great virtual facilitator look like.

Module 5: Process Observation Analysis

  • Participants will observe and analyze processes in virtual group interactions.

Module 6: Importance of Inclusion in the Virtual Setting

  • Participants will identify good practices to address common challenges in virtual facilitation and demonstrate the importance of inclusion in the virtual setting.

Module 7: Virtual Tools and Technology

  • Participants will identify common challenges in virtual facilitation, research and familiarize with the common tools and technology to address these barriers.

Module 8: Design Virtual Learning Sessions

  • Participants will design a short learning session as practice and preparation for the facilitation practicum.

Module 9: Practicum

  • Participants will apply all their learnings and facilitate a virtual session using their prepared session design.

Module 10: Overall Integration and Closing

  • This module will process the participants’ practicum experience and summarize the entire FAL learning journey.

Synchronous Session Schedule:

  • Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM - 5:30 PM (Onsite)
  • Monday, Wednesday, Friday; 9:00 PM – 12:00 NN (Online)

Target Participants:

  • HR specialists and practitioners

Participant Requirements:

  • Participants shall sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement and Data Privacy Form
  • Must have a background or has experience in facilitation in both face to face and virtual settings OR current role requires competency in the areas mentioned

Technical requirements:

  • Laptops / desktops with access and accounts to these online applications: Zoom, Google Meet, and MS Teams, Jamboard, Mentimeter, Moodle
  • Stable internet connection for live or synchronous sessions that can also support use of webcam throughout the session.

Equivalency:

  • No. of learning hours for online program: 40 Hours
  • Equivalent no. of days for face-to-face program: 5 Days
